Chappo is Roger Chapman's first solo album . It appeared in Germany in 1979 on the short-lived Acrobat Records label, which was best known for its productions by the British duo Dollar and was distributed in Germany by EMI Electrola . The first work is assigned to the genre of rock & blues. The album was able to assert itself at the height of punk music and was a surprise success. It includes songs that Chapman played live for his fans over and over again, such as Midnite Child , Who Pulled The Night Down and Hang On To A Dream (Chapman's homage to the American songwriter Tim Hardin). His debut album helped Chapman to a successful solo career that continues to this day. After the Acrobat label had ceased operations in 1980, Chappo was re- released by the German label Line Records in 1981 , after Chapman had signed a contract with Uwe Tessnow's young music label for his second solo album Mail Order Magic in 1980 .

Music genre

Chapman left the family progressive rock and the Streetwalkers hard rock sound behind and put himself on a broader musical basis with his first album. The album Chappo became a kind of template for his subsequent albums. On the basis of a rhythmically strongly accentuated R&B it varies from song to song with influences of different musical styles or mixes them in one song. The album starts with the rock song Midnite Child in a strong boogie woogie rhythm. In the songs Keep Forgettin ' and Don't Give Up , however, clear sounds of gospel, country and swing can be heard. Hang On To A Dream is a pure blues track . Who Pulled The Nite Down is based on a reggae rhythm. What connects them stylistically, however, is Chapman's unique rough singing technique.

History of origin

After his last band Streetwalkers broke up, his collaboration with his long-time musician friend John 'Charlie' Whitney broke up, but privately they remained friends. With the help of his friend Tim Hinkley, Chapman founded the tour and studio band The Shortlist , as a musical background to implement his own artistic ideas more uncompromisingly. The timing was rather unfavorable from the perspective of classic hard rock, namely at the height of punk and disco sound. The hard rock band Kiss, for example, made a compromise by partially adapting their hard rock style to the disco beat. So they celebrated their greatest success in 1979 with their song I Was Made For Lovin 'You .

reception

The album was well received by fans and music critics. Patrick Little from the online magazine Allmusic wrote that although the music can clearly be assigned to rock, Chapman is surprisingly variable in style. The influence of producer David Courtney, who already worked with Leo Sayer , is clearly visible.
