Charbel Rouhana
Charbel Rouhana (* 1965 in Amchit near Byblos , Lebanon ) is a Lebanese oud player and composer .
Life
He studied music at the University of St. Esprit in Kaslik and received his diploma for playing the oud instrument in 1986 and his master's degree in musicology in 1987. He has developed a new methodology for playing the oud. This method has been published and adopted by the Lebanese National Conservatory of Music and in the Faculty of Music at St. Esprit University, where he has also been a lecturer since 1986. In the 1980s he was a member of the Al Mayadine ensemble with Marcel Khalifé .
As a composer he worked with the choreographer Abdel-Halim Caracalla on the following pieces: “2000 and 2 Nights” (2002), “Elissa - The Queen of Carthage” (1995), “Andalusia - Verlorener Ruhm” (1997) and “Bleilit Kamar "(1999). He has won several national prizes, including first prize in the Hirayama competition for the best composition for the title “Hymn of Peace” in Japan in 1990 and the Murex d'Or as Musician of the Year in 2000 .
In Charbel's opinion, a renaissance is imminent for oriental- Arabic music , which is embodied by traditional instruments and in particular by the Oude and which is always related to traditional singing and classical Arabic instrumental music. Charbel musical writings aim to transform the Arabic traditional instruments into multinational modern instruments capable of communicating with other cultures and music, with an emphasis on the oriental-Arabic style.
