The Spreetalbahn was a branch line in Saxony that only served goods traffic . They chained in the former station Seidau from the railway Bautzen Hoyerswerda and led to Spreetal to the local factories.

history

Bridge of the former Spreetalbahn in the Bautzener Seidau

The industrial history of Seidau goes back to around 1510, when the first paper mills were set up on the Spree. In 1871, the Vereinigte Bautzner Papierfabriken AG emerged. At the end of the 19th century, this company increasingly demanded its own rail connection, which, however, did not seem feasible for topographical reasons. Only with the construction of the Bautzen – Königswartha line in 1889/90 did the construction of a branch track become realistic.

The branch line should branch off from the above line at the Seidau stop and lead down into the Spreetal on a steady gradient. The Seidau stop was intended for public loading traffic. The construction of the line up to kilometer 1.425 (Seidau stop) was carried out at state expense. The construction costs for the remaining stretch of 125,000 marks were paid for by the paper mill - the main connection. The line was opened on June 19, 1893.

In addition to the sidings of the paper factory and the Bautzner gasworks, others were added later. There were branch tracks to a quarry and a brick factory.

The first decrease in traffic occurred in 1972 when the gasworks stopped production. But it was only after the political turnaround in eastern Germany in 1990 that the line lost its traffic volume when the last operations on the line ceased production. On January 10, 1994, freight traffic was officially abandoned by DBAG .

The line was last used on the occasion of the presentation of the new DWA LVT / S light railcar on September 18-20, 1998. Today the route is dismantled.
