Charles Muller (Romanist)

Charles Muller (born September 22, 1909 , † March 2, 2015 ) was a French Romance scholar and linguist .

life and work

After the Second World War, Muller was director of the Institut français in Mainz. There he was from 1950 to 1959 the magazine La classe de français. Revue pour l'enseignement du français (Paris: Librairie des Méridiens). He worked on the textbook series Etudes françaises edited by Rita Erdle-Hähner and Hans-Wilhelm Klein .

Then he went to the University of Strasbourg and became a pioneer in language statistics . In 1966 he completed his habilitation with the Thèse Étude de statistique lexicale. Le vocabulaire du théâtre de Pierre Corneille (Paris 1967; Geneva / Paris 1979, 1993 ud T. Le Vocabulaire du théâtre de Pierre Corneille. Etude de statistique lexicale ) and became professor and editor of the series Travaux de linguistique quantitative (Paris / Geneva 1978-1998).

As a member of the Conseil international de la langue française, he was involved in moderate language cultivation and at the age of 88 created the Internet website Orthonet, on which he answered questions about French orthography for years and on which he published his first experience report at the age of 95. Since 2008, Muller was in command of the Legion of Honor .
