Hans-Wilhelm Klein

Hans-Wilhelm Klein (* 29. October 1911 in Krefeld , † 3. November 1992 in Aachen ) was a German linguist , medievalist , linguists , grammarians and foreign language teachers.

life and work

Klein studied Romance and Latin Studies in Munich, Dijon, Tübingen and Bonn, received his doctorate in 1936 at the University of Tübingen under Gerhard Rohlfs on the popular and proverbial comparisons in Latin and the Romance languages (Würzburg 1937) and was then a grammar school teacher, then from 1951–1963 lecturer , Senior teacher in higher education, later honorary professor at the University of Münster . In 1963 he was appointed to a chair for Romance philology at the University of Gießen , in 1969 at RWTH Aachen , where he retired in 1977 ( Richard Baum was successor ). Klein himself named as his main focus in research and teaching: Vulgar Latin as the basis of the Old Roman language forms, Medieval studies , linguistics and foreign language teaching . Klein was and is particularly well-known as the author of textbooks, dictionaries and grammars of French, namely the Klett grammar "Klein-Strohmeyer" (1958), the fruit of the collaboration with the older Fritz Strohmeyer , and the successor grammar "Klein-Kleineidam" (1983), which he wrote with his student Hartmut Kleineidam . Fritz Abel called both grammars “masterpieces of their genre”.

Two festschrifts were dedicated to Klein: Lebendige Romania , ed. by Albert Barrera-Vidal, Ernstpeter Ruhe and Peter Schunck (Göppingen 1976) and French language teaching and bon usage , ed. by Albert Barrera-Vidal, Hartmut Kleineidam and Manfred Raupach (Munich 1986).
