Charles Stuart (General, 1810)

Charles Stuart (March 16, 1810 - September 7, 1892 ) was a British general and politician .

He came from a branch of the House of Stuart and was the only son of the captain John James Stuart (1782-1811) and Albinia Sullivan († 1827). His paternal grandfather was Lieutenant-General Sir Charles Stuart .

He held the office of Justice of the Peace for Bute and became Bute's Deputy Lieutenant . In December 1832 he was elected to the British House of Commons for Bute , but resigned this mandate in July 1833.

He served as an officer in the British Army , held the rank of captain in 1832 , rose to the rank of general. From 1870 to 1881 he was regimentation chief of the 46th (South Devonshire) Regiment of Foot and from 1881 to 1892 he was Colonel of the 2nd Battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry . With the latter he took part in the battle of Tel-el-Kebir in 1882 .

His first marriage was on September 4, 1839, the Hon. Georgiana Stuart Gore († 1877), a lady-in-waiting to Queen Adelaide and daughter of Vice-Admiral Sir John Gore (1772-1836). In his second marriage he married Louisa Gambier Murdoch on September 24, 1878. Both marriages remained childless.
