The Charlevoix Crater is a large eroded impact crater in Québec , Canada . Only parts of the crater can be seen on the surface of the earth, the rest is covered by the St. Lawrence River . The size of the original crater is estimated to be 54 kilometers in diameter and its age to be around 350 million years. An asteroid made of stone with a diameter of at least two kilometers and a mass of 15 billion tons is likely to have struck. The 768 m high Mont des Éboulements , which is located exactly in the center of the crater, is interpreted as the central mountain of the crater.

The Charlevoix crater was recognized as an impact crater in 1965 when many cones of rays were discovered in the area.

Today around 90% of Charlevoix's residents live within the crater.
