Charlevoix is a subway station in Montreal . It is located in the Arrondissement of Le Sud-Ouest at the intersection of Rue Center and Rue Charlevoix. Trains on the green line 1 run here . In 2006, 1,660,156 passengers used the station, which corresponds to 49th place out of a total of 68 stations on Metro Montreal .

Building

Entrance pavilion

The station designed by the architects Ayotte et Bergeron was created as a tunnel station . The presence of soft Utica slate in the area limited the width, which is why the platforms had to be built on top of each other instead of side by side. The walls are clad with glazed red-orange bricks, complemented by diamond patterns on the platform levels. A large light shaft lets the daylight shine down on the distribution level . The brick entrance pavilion , in front of which there is a bus turning loop, is attached to a residential high-rise.

The side platform of the trains traveling south is at a depth of 24.4 meters, that of the trains traveling towards the city is at a depth of 29.6 meters. Thus Charlevoix is the lowest station of the entire Montreal Metro; it is the only one that lies below sea level. The distances to the neighboring stations, measured from station end to station start, are 707.25 meters to LaSalle and 1077.31 meters to Lionel-Groulx . There are connections to four bus routes operated by the Société de transport de Montréal . The Lachine Canal is nearby .

art

Stained glass

Two windows with stained glass are installed directly above and below the distribution level . The Belgian glassblower Pierre Osterrath created it based on a template designed by Mario Meola. They are painted with abstract patterns and together are 35.7 m² in size. On the long way between the platforms and the surface, they soften the impression of great depth.

history

The station opened on September 3, 1978, together with the Atwater - Angrignon section of the green line. Name giver is Rue Charlevoix, named after the French Jesuit and historian Pierre François Xavier de Charlevoix (1682–1761), who undertook long research trips in New France .
