Charlie Powers (cellist)

Charlie Powers (* 20th century ) is an American cellist .

Powers began his training as a cellist at the age of three with Jeannette Chapman . After graduating from Bellarmine Preparatory High School in Tacoma, he studied at the New England Conservatory with Colin Carr , John Michel , Richard Aaron , David Wells , Michael Mermagen and Natasha Brofsky , graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 2001. He performed with the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and in the summer of 2005 was principal cellist in the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra under James Levine . In September 2005 he became a staff sergeant cellist with The President's Own United States Marine Chamber Orchestra .

He was a member of the Kaohsiung City Symphony Orchestra in Taiwan and has performed at the White House , the State Department , the Library of Congress , the Kennedy Center and the Vice President's residence. In the 2014–15 season he was cellist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra . He is a founding member of the Pittsburgh Cello Quartet , the Teiber String Trio and the Phillips Camerata and has performed with musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma , Ricardo Morales and Peter Wiley . In Tanglewood he was awarded the Karl Zeise Memorial Cello Award . He played world premieres of works by Aulis Sallinen and Jennifer Higdon for cello and orchestra.
