from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Charlotte Diane de Foix-Candale (* in Bénauges ; † May 24, 1587 in Bordeaux ) was a Comtesse de Gurson. She married Louis de Foix-Candale, vicomte de Meille, comte de Gurson (1556–1587) around 1579. The couple had three daughters and one son. Her husband died on July 29, 1587 at the Battle of Montraveau , bataille de Montraveau near Nérac .

She was the daughter of Frédéric de Foix-Candale, comte de Benauge et de Candale (1536–1571), comte d'Astarac and her mother Françoise l'Aînée de La Rochefoucauld († 1583); both married from 1540. She had another brother, Henri de Foix-Candale, comte de Benauge († 1572).

Her paternal uncle was François de Foix-Candale (1512–1594) and Bishop of Aire , Evêque d'Aire . He worked in his diocese of Aire between the year 1576 and February 5, 1594 and was also a contemporary who was very interested in alchemical and medical topics.

Michel de Montaigne dedicated chapter 26 of his essais to her, which deals with the upbringing of children, De l'institution des enfants . Montaigne explained to Diane de Foix-Candale his foundations for a rational education. Chapter 26 of Book 1 of the Essais was written in the last months of 1579, shortly before the birth of Diane de Foix's first child, who had married Louis de Foix, comte de Gurson. The Comtesse was expecting her child and Montaigne tried to offer an answer for a "good upbringing".
