Charlotte Elliott

Charlotte Elliott (born March 18, 1789 in Brighton , † September 22, 1871 ) was a British poet and hymn writer. She is best known for her sacred song “Just as I am”.

Life

Charlotte was born to the silk merchant Charles Elliot and his wife Eling Venn. Eling was the daughter of the preacher Henry Venn and the sister of the social reformer and philanthropist John Venn . She spent the first 32 years of her life in Clapham . In 1832 she moved to Brighton. She was a member of the Church of England , but could not attend church services for health reasons. In 1834, at the age of 32, after having been an invalid for 13 years, she published “Just as I am”. William B. Bradbury composed the music for the song, which was later translated into numerous languages.

In total, Elliot wrote about 150 hymns and numerous poems.

She died in 1871 and is now buried with her brothers in the cemetery at St. Andrew's Church, Hove .
