Donald Andrew Russell

Donald Andrew Frank Moore Russell FBA (born October 13, 1920 - February 9, 2020 ) was a British classical scholar .

Life

After attending King's College School at Wimbledon , Russell studied Classics at Balliol College , Oxford . During the Second World War he served first in the Royal Corps of Signals (1941-1943), then in the Intelligence Corps (1943-1945). After acquiring the D.Litt. he was a Fellow and Tutor in Classics at St John's College from 1948 to 1988 . From 1952 to 1978 he was also a university lecturer in classical literature at the University of Oxford . In 1971 he was made a Fellow of the British Academy. In 1978 he was appointed reader, 1985 professor of classical literature at the Faculty of Classics at the University of Oxford. In 1981 he gave the JH Gray Lectures at the University of Cambridge . In 1985 he was a visiting professorship at the University of North Carolina , and from 1989 to 1991 at Stanford University . Since 1988 he has been an emeritus fellow at St John's College and continues to be active in research and teaching. In 2013 he celebrated his 65th anniversary as a fellow in the service of St John's College. Only two fellows have achieved seniority in the college's history. Even at the age of 93, he was still teaching Latin prose composition (language and style) courses for undergraduates.

Russell was since 1967 with the Renaissance historian Joy Russell, nee Joyceline Gledhill Dickinson (1919-1993), married.

Research priorities

Russell mainly worked on the philosophy of editions on Greek and Latin rhetoric ( Menander Rhetor , Dion Chrysostomos , Libanios and Quintilian as well as on the rhetorical form of declamation ), ethics ( Plutarch ) and literary theory ( Pseudo-Longinos , Plutarch, Pseudo-Herakleitos ' Homeric Problems ) of the imperial era and second sophistry . Most recently he worked on a translation of the Neoplatonic philosopher Aeneas of Gaza and the late antique bishop and church historian Zacharias of Mytilene .
