Chatan Yara ( Japanese 北 谷 屋 良 , Kitae Yara ; * approx. 1760 in Chatan , Kingdom of Ryūkyū (now Japan ); † 1812 ) was one of the first martial arts experts in karate and Kobudo .

Live and act

In 1772 he went to Fujian (China) to study the art of Quanfa ( Xingyi and Chi Kung ) under Wong Chung-Yoh . He also received lessons in the art of and the Chinese butterfly knife. He stayed in China for 20 years. When he returned to Okinawa, he found his country in dire straits. Okinawa was tributary to China and at the same time was occupied by the Shimazu from Satsuma in Japan . There were many Japanese samurai who roamed about and caused great damage to the Okinawans. Yara decided to teach his village residents his martial arts, but the overworked people couldn't keep up the training and soon he ran out of students. Although he never opened a school again, Yara is one of the most important masters of early Okinawan martial arts. He is considered to be the first to teach the principle of inner balance in martial arts and was the founder of the concept of "inner strength" ( Chi ), which was spread after him by Higaonna Kanryo and Miyagi Chojun in Naha-te . The Okinawan terms Reimyo Tode and Shimpi Tode come from his time. Yara stayed away from the martial arts scene in Okinawa in the rest of his life. Not only was he one of the first, but also one of the great martial arts masters of Okinawa, but he is best described as Kage deshi (student in the shadows). He was the official successor ( Uchi deshi ) of Kushanku , who also taught Sakugawa . The original Kushanku Kata (Chatan Yara no Kushanku) spread through Yara and was later mainly transmitted through Kyan Chotoku . His further life is shrouded in mysteries.
