Chatham Island is an uninhabited island about 1200 meters off the south coast of Western Australia near the D'Entrecasteaux National Park . The nearly one square kilometer island belongs to the South Ward of Manjimup Shire in the Great Southern Region of Western Australia. The next place on the mainland is Walpole .
It was discovered in 1791 by George Vancouver on board the HMS Discovery , who first gave it the name Cape Chatham . The island was later renamed Chatham Island.
