Chaukhandi tombs

Chaukhandi graves (also Chaukundi graves ) is the name of a burial ground that has existed since pre-Islamic times and is located just under 30 km east of Karachi in the Sindh province (southeastern Pakistan). The name, which means "square", is derived from the mausoleums of the rich, whose walled dome is supported by four corner pillars.

The sandstone slabs are put together without mortar and have been wearing rich stonemasonry since the 16th century , which is specifically “Sindhic” and not related to other styles. Several stone boxes are stacked on top of one another and taper towards the top. The women's graves are decorated with flowers and jewelry that reflect the importance of the dead. The figurative representations on the men's graves (weapons, horses, riders) are un-Islamic.

Similar graves can also be found in Hinidan, Balochistan Province . That is why the Chaukhandi tombs are also called "Baluchi tombs".
