Chauncey H. Griffith (* 1879 in Irontown , Ohio , † 1956 in Butler , New York ) was an American typesetter and type designer .

Life

With the Mergenthaler Linotype Company since 1906 , Griffith became assistant to the company's President in 1915. In 1936 he became vice president of the company, responsible for typographic development. In this capacity, important type designers such as William Addison Dwiggins and Rudolf Růžička worked for him. His newspaper publications in particular, such as Corona and Excelsior , have found a very wide distribution. His Bell Gothic , developed for the Bell Company's telephone books , later inspired Matthew Carter to create the Bell Centennial .
