The Chełmiec (German Hochwald ) is an 851 meter high extinct volcano west of Wałbrzych ( Waldenburg ) in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship , Poland . On the Chełmiec there is a 69 meter high transmission tower in steel framework construction, a 45 meter high metal cross and a castle ruin.

Towards the end of the 19th century, the summit began to be opened up for tourist activities and in 1888 a 22-meter-high stone observation tower was built. In the 1920s and 30s there were regular car rallies on the summit road. The observation tower building was converted into a television tower after the Second World War . In 1973 a separate 69 meter high steel lattice tower was erected as a transmission tower and the observation tower was reopened to visitors. In 1981 a jammer was installed to interfere with Radio Free Europe .

In 2000 a 45 meter high steel truss cross was erected on the mountain. It was inaugurated on September 23, 2000 and is illuminated at night. Since the cross has no function, its construction was controversial because of the cost and the impairment of the landscape.

Trivia

The high forest is also sung about in the third stanza of the Schlesierlied ( O, you home, dear and trust ):

Where the high forest proudly rests its head

surrounded by the green of the forest,

where the black diamond

comes to light by the miner's hand:

There you are, my Silesian country.
