Cheb mommy
Cheb Mami (stage name; Arabic شاب مامي, DMG Šāb Māmī ), real name: Mohamed Kélifati , (محمد خليفاتي Muhammad Chalifati , DMG Muḥammad Ḫalīfātī ; * July 11, 1966 in Graba-el-Oued , Saïda , Algeria ) is one of the most important Raï interpreters. He is best known worldwide for his numerous duets with international pop stars (for example "Desert Rose" with Sting and "Cosi 'Celeste" with Zucchero ).
Life
Cheb Mami initially worked as a welder in a metal factory and only made music on the weekends or in his free time on religious occasions. He later joined the music group Al Azhar , with whom he made appearances in the club and nightclub scene. In 1982, his bandmates encouraged him to take part in a talent competition on Algerian television, where he took second place. Through the competition, the local record company Disco Maghreb had become aware of him, for which he recorded about ten music cassettes in the years 1982-85, of which several 100,000 copies were then produced and sold without Mommy being paid appropriately.
In 1987, Mami was accepted into the Algerian army, where he served as an animator and artist in the military bases for two years. From 1986 he released further albums on the French label Horizon Music and in 1990 switched to Virgin Records / EMI. He reached the peak of his career in 2000 when he collaborated with Sting and produced the jointly produced song Desert Rose .
On July 3, 2009, the musician was sentenced to five years in prison in France for participating in an attempted forced abortion. A court in Bobigny found the Prince of Raï guilty of threatening, detaining and torturing his pregnant ex-girlfriend. He was allowed to leave the prison on March 23, 2011, subject to conditions.
