Chemical Abstracts Service
The Chemical Abstracts Service ( CAS ) is a subdivision of the American Chemical Society founded in 1907 and based in Columbus , Ohio . Its publication organ Chemical Abstracts (CA) aims to index and summarize all chemistry- relevant publications worldwide . Around 10,000 journals (as of 2010), books in around 50 languages, dissertations , conference reports and patents from 27 national organizations and two international organizations evaluated.

The CAS is best known for its large databases of chemical compounds and their unique key, the CAS Registry Number , usually called CAS number in German . In June 2015, 100 million registered organic and inorganic substances were reached. Most of the services and products offered by CAS are commercial. STN (The Scientific & Technical Information Network) is important for research access to the CAS (and other) specialist and patent databases .
CASSI (CAS Source Index) regulates how journal titles are abbreviated for reference in references. The 'CASSI Search Tool' automates the process in both directions. The trade journal title can be generated from an abbreviation and vice versa. You can also use the CODEN, ISBN, etc. ISSN of the corresponding journal / book title can be found.
software
CAS publishes the commercial computer program SciFinder for searching the databases. The SciFinder Scholar is a version with limited search options that is often used at universities. Both offer a graphical user interface that allows you to search for chemical structures.
