The Cheonan Hyundai Capital Skywalkers VC ( Korean : 천안 현대 캐피탈 스카이 워커스 배구단) are a South Korean men's volleyball team from Cheonan , Chungcheongnam-do that has played in the V-League since 2005 . The club is also known by its former name Hyundai Capital VC .

history

Semi-professional years (1983-2004)

The club was founded in 1983 under its then name Hyundai Motor Service VC and competed in the semi-professional Korean Volleyball Superleague . The club's first coach was Song Man-ki. The club won the league in 1986 and in the 1987 season that followed twice. In 1990, Lee In, a new coach, took over the post. In 1993, Lee In was coached by Kang Man-su , a former Hyundai volleyball player. Under him, the club was able to celebrate the championship in 1994 and 1995. In 1999 the club was renamed Hyundai Motors VC . 2001 with Song Man-deok a new trainer took over the chief position. Two years later, Kim Ho-cheol took over from Song Man-deok.

First professional years (2005-2010)

After the founding of the V-League, the club announced on February 15, 2005 that it would join the V-League. For this purpose, the club moved to Cheonan and renamed itself Cheonan Hyundai Capital Skywalkers VC .

In its first season, the club immediately reached 2nd place in the regular season and qualified for the play-off games. There the club failed, however, at the Daejeon Samsung Fire Bluefangs with 1: 3 after games. In the following 2005/06 season, the club improved to first place in the regular season. In the play-off final the Daejeon Samsung Fire Bluefangs VC met again, which this time they beat 3-2 after games in an exciting final and thus won the championship in the second professional game. In 2006 they competed in the newly founded KOVO Cup . In the KOVO Cup 2006 they were able to successfully master the group phase and competed in the semifinals against KEPCO VC and beat them 3: 1 in sets. In the final they met again on the Daejeon Samsung Fire Bluefangs VC, which they could beat again after sets 3: 1 and thus became cup winners.

With the cup victory and the previous championship behind them, the club started the new 2006/07 season. There the club was able to finish the regular season in first place. In the play-off final they met the Daejeon Fire Bluefangs VC. In the best-of-3 mode, the club won the final 3-0 after winning games and was even able to defend the title for the first time. In the second edition of the KOVO Cup, the club again successfully mastered the group phase and then met the meanwhile rival club Daejeon Fire Bluefangs VC. However, this time they lost 3-0 in sets in the semi-final game. The club did not reach 1st place in the regular season for the first time in the 2007/08 league season. The club finished the regular season in second place. In the play-off semifinals they met Incheon Korean Air Jumbos VC , which they could beat with 2-1 won games and qualified for the final. There you met Daejeon Fire Bluefangs VC again. However, this time they were defeated by Daejeon with 0: 3 won games and this time could not defend the title. In the KOVO Cup held in 2008, the club was able to master the group phase again and met LIG-Versicherung VC in the semifinals , which they beat 3-1 in sets. In the league, the club again reached 2nd place in the regular season and qualified for the play-off games. In the semifinals they competed for the finals against Incheon Korean Air Jumbos VC. They were able to win both games 3-0 each time and thus move into the play-off final. In the final, the Daejeon Samsung Fire Bluefangs VC met again. In the best-off-4-mode the club lost the championship very narrowly with 3: 4 won games.

The club went into the new cup season as defending champions. As before, the club successfully survived the group stage and faced the Incheon Korean Air Jumbos VC in the semifinals. The semi-final game was lost 3-0. In the league, the club only reached 3rd place in the regular season for the first time, but was still able to qualify for the play-off games. In the play-off semi-finals, they met the Daejeon Samsung Fire Bluefangs VC. The club lost the semifinals with 0: 3 won games and was eliminated for the first time in the semifinals. After the season ended, Kim Ho-cheol left the club. The club's new coach was Ha Jong-hwa .

Unsuccessful years (2011-2015)

Under the leadership of Ha Jong-hwa, the club entered the cup competition. There they failed in the group phases and were eliminated surprisingly early. In the league competition, the club again reached 3rd place and was thus able to qualify for the play-off games again. In the quarter-final play-off they met the Suwon KEPCO Vixtorm VC. They won the first leg 3-0 and the second leg 3-1 so they could qualify for the semifinals. In the semifinals, they then met the Incheon Korean Air Jumbos VC. However, they lost 2-1 after winning games and were eliminated again in the semi-finals.

In the new cup season, the club was able to improve again. The club was able to successfully master the group phase again and met LIG-Versicherung VC in the semifinals. They were able to successfully finish the semi-final game 3-0. In the final of the cup they faced the Seoul Dreamsixs VC . They beat the Seoul Dreamsixs VC 3-1 and won the trophy again. In the league, the club again reached 3rd place in the regular season and then met in the semi-finals of the play-offs on Incheon Korean Air Jumbos VC. In the best-off 2 mode, the club lost 2-0 after winning games. After the end of the season, Ha Jong-hwa did not extend the contract, so he left the club. He was succeeded by long-time coach Kim Ho-cheol.

The 2014 cup season went very badly under Kim Ho-cheol. The club failed as defending champions again in the group stage. In the league, however, things went better again. The club fought for second place in the table in the regular season. In the semifinals they met again on Incheon Korean Air Jumbos VC, which this time they could beat 3-0 and 3-1. In the final that followed, Daejeon Samsung Fire Bluefangs VC met again. The final was lost with 1: 3 after winning games.

In the KOVO Cup, the club was again unable to master the group stage and was eliminated very early. The league season was also bad. The club ended the season for the first time in 5th place in the table and could not qualify for the play-offs. The club dismissed Kim Ho-cheol due to the bad season and introduced a new coach with Choi Tae-ung .

Choi Tae-ung era (since 2016)

Under Choi Tae-ung, the club also failed to qualify for the play-offs in the KOVO Cup and failed again in the group stage. In the league, however, things went better. In the regular season the club reached first place in the table for the first time. In the final, they met Ansan OK Savings Bank Rush & Cash for the first time . The final was lost again with 1: 3 after winning games. In 2017, the club was again unable to master the group stage in the cup and was eliminated very early. In the league, however, things went better again. The club reached the 2nd place after the end of the regular season. In the semifinals, they then met Suwon KEPCO Vixtorm VC and were able to beat them 2-0 after winning games. Incheon Korean Air Jumbos VC awaited them again in the final. In the best-off-3 mode, the club was able to win the final 3-2 after winning games for the first time in a long time and become volleyball champion.

With the championship behind them, the club was able to master the group stage again for the first time in the KOVO Cup. In the semifinals they met the Daejeon Samsung Fire Bluefangs VC. The game was lost with 1: 3 in sets. In the league, the club was able to fight for 1st place again in the regular season. In the final that followed, they met the Incheon Korean Air Jumbos VC. However, the club could not beat Incheon in the best-off-3 mode and lost the final with 1: 3 after winning games.

The Skywalkers are rivaled by the Daejeon Samsung Fire Bluefangs . Their derby is called V-Classic Match and exists because of their sporting rivalry. The same goes for the rivalry with Incheon Korean Air Jumbos VC . The Skywalkers are also rivaled by Suwon KEPCO Vixtorm VC due to their geographical proximity .
