Chester Cup
The Chester Cup , also known as Tradesmen's Cup, is a traditional British horse race for thoroughbred horses of at least four years of age or older. The flat race will be held over a distance of 3755 m at Chester Racecourse in England. The race distance is comparatively long and it is therefore included in the standing races. The participating horses are assigned weights beforehand by the balancer (handicapper) according to their previous performance, which they have to carry in the race, so that all participants in the race have the same chance of victory as possible.
history
The horse race was founded in 1824 and was originally called the Tradesmen's Cup. After being called the Tradesmen's Plate for a while, it was renamed the Chester Trades' Cup in 1874. Chester Cup is the title in use since 1884.
Horse racing was founded during a period when horse racing was one of the most popular mass events in Britain. Horse racing was the sport that drew the greatest crowds at the beginning of the Victorian Age. Racing events near major cities that drew more than ten thousand spectators were not considered uncommon. Occasionally more than 60,000 spectators attended events such as the Grand National and the horse races in Ascot . Before it became customary in the late 1870s to completely fence off the racetracks, entry was free for the general public. Numerous booths lined the circuit, which added to the attractiveness of attending such a racing event. Since alcohol was also sold at the stands, horse races were also known for the numerous fights that occurred on such racing days. There were grandstands and demarcated areas for the wealthier classes. What all shifts had in common was the willingness to bet on the outcome of the race . The Chester Cup in 1855 wagered over £ 1 million.
The online betting company Betway has sponsored the race since 2015 .
