Michael Roberts (Jockey)

Michael Muis Roberts , (born May 17, 1954 in South Africa ) is a former South African jockey .

Roberts' career began in his native South Africa, where he spent five years at the South African Academy of Jockeys, a breeding ground for many top jockeys. A total of eleven times he won the title of Champion Jockey in his home country. Roberts came to Great Britain in 1978 and won 25 more victories there in the same year. In 1992 he became Champion Jockey in Great Britain with 206 wins. He took his 1000th British victory in 1994 and has won 3,964 times in his worldwide career. He has won over 25 group races including the 1995 Japanese Cup on Lando .

In September 2001 he had a serious fall with spinal injuries in Wolverhampton , which ended his career, but also initiated his new career as a coach.
