The Chibcha water mice ( Chibchanomys ) are a species of rodent living in northern South America from the group of fish rats within the New World mice . They are of two types.

Like the other fish rats, these animals are adapted to aquatic life. They reach a head body length of 11 to 13 centimeters, the tail becomes as long as the body. Their fur is black-gray on the top, the underside is lighter.

They live in northern South America in Colombia , Venezuela , Ecuador and Peru . Several animals were found on the river bank of a densely forested mountain at an altitude of around 2500 meters. They search for food in the water and feed on aquatic insects, crabs and other aquatic animals.

There are two types:

  • Chibchanomys orcesi was not described until 1997. The species lives in southern Ecuador.
  • Chibchanomys trichotis is common in Venezuela, Colombia and Peru. Before its classification in the new genus Chibchanomys , the species was incorporated into Ichthyomys .
