Chickahominy (people)

The Chickahominy (pronounced tschicke-) are a people of Virginia Algonquian that around Richmond , Virginia to live, especially in the counties New Kent and Charles City .

During the arrival of the English colonists in 1607 , the Chickahominy were allies of Chief Powhatan .

Today, the population consists of approximately 750 people who live within a five-mile radius of downtown Charles City County, as well as several hundred who reside in other areas of the United States. The people were recognized by the state of Virginia in 1983.
