The Chifley Tower is the tallest building in the Australian metropolis of Sydney .
The office tower has a height of 244 meters and was built between 1988 and 1992 according to plans by the architects Kohn Pedersen Fox . The executing construction company was Multiplex Construction . With construction costs of 1.2 billion AUD, the Chifley Tower is one of the most expensive structures ever to be built. The high cost can partly be explained by the built-in pendulum on the upper floors. This consists of a 400-ton steel block that swings on 75-millimeter-thick steel cables and thus compensates for the wind movements of the tower. The building was named after Ben Chifley in honor of the 16th Prime Minister of Australia .
