R. Chija bar Abba I. (also: Chijja - the name is probably abbreviated from Achijja = Ahija - the elder , Ruba or Rabba ; honorary title of restorer of the Torah ; born in Babylonia , perhaps from the exile family - he claimed descent from David ) a Jewish law teacher of the 2nd / 3rd AD century at the time of the upheaval between Mishnah and Gemara and is considered one of the most influential Talmud teachers .

He later came to Palestine, where he lived in Tiberias and worked in the silk trade.

His father was probably from Kafri in Babylonia. Chija was a student and friend of Yehuda ha-Nasis , uncle and teacher of Rab .

Together with his student R. Hoschaja bar Chama, Chija was one of the most important collectors and editors of the Tosefta , d. H. of the doctrines and records not included in the Mishnah by Yehuda ha-Nasi. The rabbinical tradition mentions his Mishnajot collection several times, and his significant involvement in Sifra is discussed .

Chija and his two esteemed sons, Judah and Chiskiah, died in Galilee .
