Chikubu-shima ( Japanese 竹 生 島 ) is one of the three islands in Lake Biwa, Japan . It is administered by Nagahama , Shiga Prefecture .
The island is only 0.14 km² and has a coastline of 2 km.
Various works of the performing arts of Japan have a reference to the island and were named after it, including a Nō piece Chikubushima , a Heikyoku (musical processing of Heike Monogatari ), two Jiuta ( Shamisen pieces), two Jōruri (an Itchūbushi and a Tokiwazubushi ), as well as a Nagauta .
The Tsukubusuma Shrine ( 都 久 夫 須 麻 神社 ), which is said to have been founded in 420, is of particular importance . Together with the Enoshima Shrine on Enoshima in Sagami Bay southwest of Tokyo and the Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima Island in Hatsukaichi in Hiroshima Prefecture , it is one of the three large Benzaite shrines. In addition, the Shingon Buddhist temple Hōgon-ji ( 宝 厳 寺 ), which was founded in 724, is located on the island .
The island is developed for tourism and is called several times a day by ferries from Nagahama , Hikone and Takashima .
