Chilov ( Azerbaijani Çilov adası ) is an island off the coast of Azerbaijan in the Caspian Sea , about 100 km east of the Azerbaijani capital Baku .

geography

Chilov is located about 15 km from the eastern end of the Abşeron Peninsula . The island is around 11.5 square kilometers and has numerous bays and headlands due to its irregular shape . The highest point on the island is eight meters above sea level.

Administratively, Chilov is part of the Xəzər district in the Baku province.

history

In 1781 a Russian expedition led by Rear Admiral Count Mark Voynovich discovered large deposits of oil and gas on the seabed off the island.

economy

On the island and around Chilov there are oil-producing and oil-processing plants that exploit the oil deposits in the region.
