Chilperic of Aquitaine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chilperic of Aquitaine or Chilperic (II.) († 632 ) was a son of Charibert II and sub-king of Aquitaine in 632.

Life

After the death of his grandfather Chlothar II. 629/630, Chilperich's father Charibert II received a sub-kingdom in Aquitaine with the seat of Toulouse under pressure from the Neustrian nobility . Charibert died suddenly at the age of only 18 on April 8, 632. Chilperich, who must have been very young at the time, succeeded his father. The Fredegar Chronicle reports that Dagobert killed Chilperich a little later; Since the chronicle describes Dagobert in a negative way anyway, this cannot be proven in the end. In any case, Dagobert was striving for sole rule. It seemed as if the desired division of the empire into New Troburgundy and Australia had been given up, but it should be carried out all the more consistently with Dagobert's sons under pressure from the nobility.

Chilperic was buried next to his father in the Basilica of St-Romain (Blaye) .
