The founding of the CRRC is largely based on the initiative of Deng Pufang ( Deng Xiaoping's son ). He himself suffered from a paraplegic syndrome. In the 1980s, with the support of other public figures and a group of doctors, he succeeded in bringing the concept of rehabilitation , which was practically unknown in China, onto the government's agenda.

Construction work began in 1986 and the opening ceremony took place on October 28, 1988. This made the CRRC the first rehabilitation clinic in the PRC. The facility also received international support, particularly from Japan, Canada and Germany. International contacts are maintained, including in the form of a partnership with the Berlin Accident Hospital .

The clinic was originally built for 600 patients, but currently around 900 patients are treated. A new building with modern equipment for diagnostics as well as therapy from the operating room to the stroke unit to physical therapy is currently being built .

function

The clinic primarily serves the rehabilitation of people with physical disabilities. There are also departments for the treatment of patients with paraplegic syndromes , strokes as well as malformations and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. A special aspect is the integration of "western" and traditional Chinese medicine . This also includes the supply of prostheses and wheelchairs, and of course there is a pharmacy for traditional medicines. A rescue center for the care of acutely ill patients is also connected.

Several well-known patients have been treated at the CRRC, including the "basketball girl" Qian Hongyan.

Furthermore, the house is the central training center for the network of over 200 rehabilitation clinics in the PR China that has now been established. Training for nursing staff, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and doctors alike takes place. At the same time, various textbooks and information materials on the topics of rehabilitation and disability are published.

Finally, the CRRC advises both the China Disabled Persons Federation and the government on medical rehabilitation issues.
