Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention

The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention ( Chinese  中国疾病预防控制中心 , Pinyin Zhōngguó jibing Yufang kòngzhì Zhongxin , English Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention , in short: CCDC or CDC ) was founded in 2002 and is under the National Health Commission with Beijing headquarters .

Predecessor institutions and founding history

On December 23, 1983, the Chinese Center for Preventive Medicine ( Chinese  中国 预防 医学 中心 , Pinyin Zhōngguó yùfáng yīxué zhōngxīn ) was founded in order to standardize the different local regulations and procedures for disease prevention. On January 19, 1986, the center was renamed the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine ( Chinese  中国 预防 医学 科学院 , Pinyin Zhōngguó yùfáng yīxué kēxuéyuàn ). Then, on January 23, 2002, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention was re-established by several authorities merging their departments into the center. Corresponding disease control centers exist at all levels of the country, in the provinces, cities, districts and counties, which are affiliated to the health commissions at the corresponding levels.

tasks

The centre's responsibilities include protecting public health and safety by providing information to improve health decisions and promoting work with provincial health commissions and other organizations. The CCDC focuses its attention on national development and application of disease (especially infectious disease ) prevention and control , environmental health, occupational safety and health, health promotion, prevention and education to improve the health of people in the People's Republic of China.

General Manager Gao

George F. Gao is the current General Manager. On November 1, 2018, he organized the first World Influenza Day on the 100th anniversary of the Spanish flu epidemic. This was also the commemoration day of the outbreak of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong in November 2002 , which led the Chinese government to invest heavily in the public health system.
