Chinese input method from CKC

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Chinese input method of CKC is a Chinese input method for computers to encode characters . The method that is used is the four-corner method .

The coding uses a maximum of four numbers (0 to 9) to represent a Chinese character . Any properties of the strokes that make up a Chinese character have been divided into ten groups. Each group is indicated using one of the ten possible numbers. The Chinese characters can be entered by determining the lines based on the four corners of the character. The uncomplicated coding using ten numbers enables Chinese characters to be entered using a numeric keyboard .

There are supplements available for both long characters and short characters . The starting points of the coding apply to both scripts. This means that the user only needs to be trained once and that the ability applies to both the long-character version of the Chinese input method of CKC and the short-character version.

CKC's Chinese input method training is provided by the CKC Center for the Development of Information Technology for Chinese Language Teaching at The Hong Kong Institute of Education, IVE Haking Wong and the Center for Advancement of Chinese Language Education and Research at Hong Kong University carried out.

The composition

An example of CKC's Chinese input method.

The composition of groups of lines and the corresponding numbers between 0 and 9 can be defined as follows:

一 橫 二 豎 三點 捺
叉 四 插 五 方塊 六
七 角 八 八九 是 小
撇 與 左 勾 都是 零

This means: 1 is a horizontal line, 2 is a vertical or diagonal line, 3 is a point or a diagonal line from left to right, 4 is two lines in the form of a cross, 5 is three or more lines, with one line all other strokes crossed, 6 is a square, 7 is a stroke with an angle, 8 is the shape of the Chinese character and the inverted shape of the character and the inverted variant, and 0 is a diagonal line from right to left or a dash with a curve to the right.

Coding rule: some characters

  1. The coding sequence: the coding starts with the upper left corner, then the upper right corner, then the lower left corner and finally the lower right corner. Example: the CKC code for the character is 0760.
  2. If there are multiple ways to encode a character, use the one that describes most of the strokes in the character. Example: the CKC code for the character is 2399 instead of 2393.
  3. Code each shape ONCE only. Example: The CKC code for the character is 06 instead of 0066.
  4. If there are several ways to encode a character, it is advisable to encode the mostly left or right strokes of the character. Example: the CKC code for the last character is 1111 instead of 2222.
  5. Lines on the upper side of the character are more important for coding than the lower lines. Example: the CKC code for the last character is 5307 instead of 7307.

Availability software

The software can be downloaded from The CKC Chinese Input System website and is compatible with Microsoft Windows . The software is still being developed for other systems such as Linux , Palm and Pocket PC .

The Chinese input method CKC can also be used without installing the program on the computer . CKC can be used on any computer through WebCKC if the computer is connected to the Internet and Microsoft Internet Explorer is used to enter Chinese characters. The entered text is saved in the clipboard and can therefore be copied to almost any desired application.
