The Chiriqui broad-winged bat ( Eptesicus chiriquinus ) is a bat in the smooth-nosed family that is found in South America and Panama .

With a head body length of 62 to 69 mm, a tail length of 36 to 51 mm and a weight of 9 to 13 g, the species is a medium-sized representative of the genus. It has 43 to 48 mm long forearms, 9 to 13 mm long hind feet and 12 to 17 mm long ears. The upper side of the fur is mostly colored black, although there are also specimens with golden brown fur. The underside is covered with brown fur. The 8 to 10 mm long hairs on the top are characteristic. Of the members of the genus with short forearms (less than 48 mm), only the black broad-winged bat ( Eptesicus andinus ) has hair of similar length. In comparison between these two species, the Chiriqui broad-winged bat has a clearly pronounced crest .

Distribution and way of life

The Chiriqui broad-winged bat has several separate populations in Ecuador , Colombia , Venezuela, and Panama. According to a 2013 study, it also occurs in the Brazilian Amazon basin and in the area of ​​the Mata Atlântica . It resides in evergreen tropical forests and other wet forests. The species lives in the lowlands and in mountains up to 3000 meters above sea level.

The Chiriqui broad-winged bat hunts insects. She often uses forest aisles and the vicinity of roads.
