Chris Carter (born May 4, 1952 in Auckland ) is a New Zealand politician ( Labor Party ). From 2002 to 2008 he was minister, although his areas of responsibility changed frequently. Among other things, he was Minister of Housing from 2005 to 2007 and then Minister of Education until 2008.

In parliament, Carter represents the constituency of Te Atatu , where he was first elected to the New Zealand House of Representatives in 1993 . Although he was not directly re-elected in 1996 and received only one seat through the party, he managed direct re-election in his constituency of Te Atatu in 1999, 2002 and 2005 .

Carter was born in 1952 and grew up in Panmure , a suburb of Auckland. He was educated at St Peter's College in Auckland and studied at the University of Auckland , where he received an MA in history.

Before embarking on a career in politics, he worked as a teacher and as a poultry farmer. His partner is Peter Kaiser , who works as a teacher. He has lived with him for over 30 years. Carter and Kaiser were married on February 10, 2007. Carter was the first New Zealand parliamentarian to enter a civil union .

Carter was the first openly gay man appointed to a ministerial office in New Zealand. He is committed to LGBT rights in New Zealand.
