Chris John (born September 14, 1979 in Jakarta as Yohannes Christian John ) is an Indonesian boxer and former WBA super featherweight champion.

Professional career

John started professional boxing in 1998. In 1999 he won the Indonesian Championship and in 2001 the Pan-Asian featherweight title.

In September 2003 he won the WBA interim title in his home country . He defeated the Colombian southpaw Oscar León with a narrow point win. This title was later upgraded to the "regular" WBA title when Juan Manuel Márquez was named WBA Superchampion, since Márquez at that time owned both the WBA and IBF world titles . In 2004, John played his only fight outside of Indonesia when he defeated the Japanese Osamu Sato on points in Tokyo in a title defense .

In 2005 he defeated former world champion Derrick Gainer , but went down in the first round. In the same year, Márquez lost his title and John rose to become the sole WBA title holder. This made him only the third Indonesian world champion in professional boxing.

Márquez then traveled to Indonesia in March 2006 to regain his title, but lost sensationally and controversially on points, which brought John great interest in the international press for the first time. He has now defended his world title 15 times.

Wushu

In addition to his boxing career, John is also successful in Wushu . He won the national championship, the gold medal at the 1997 Southeast Asian Games in Jakarta and bronze in 2001 in Kuala Lumpur .
