Christel Rupke

Christel Rupke , married. Schaufuhs , used Hüsecken , (born March 7, 1919 in Ohligs , † November 16, 1998 in Solingen ) was a German swimmer .

Christel Rupke was born as the daughter of the factory owner Max Rupke and his wife Elise, née Melchior. She had older brothers, through which they pool for swimming in Ohligser potions came.

At the age of twelve, Christel Rupke began swimming at Ohligser SV 04 . She had only passed her free swimmer test the year before . After she finished third in the German championship over 100 meters back in 1934 at the age of 15, she won the title in 1935, 1936 in Plauen and 1937 in Halberstadt . In addition, she set a total of four national records, including a. in March 1937 over 200 meters back (2: 56.3 min) and in September of the same year over 400 meters back (6: 17.3 min). She was the first German who needed less than three minutes over the 200-meter distance, which was only slightly above the world record and remained unmatched for several years.

In 1936 Rupke started - as the first athlete from her hometown - at the Olympic Games in Berlin in her championship discipline, but dropped out after the first run, in which she finished fifth. In 1938 she ended her sporting career.

After the end of her sports career, Christel Rupke married, who had completed a commercial apprenticeship at Bremshey and later worked for the Solingen city administration, in the same year; her husband died the following year. In 1943 she married again, her second husband died as a soldier in Russia in 1945. Both marriages produced three children.

In August 1935, Christel Rupke was awarded an honorary prize by the city of Solingen and was the first to be entered in the city's golden book . In 1954 she was the first woman to be awarded the badge of honor of the West German Swimming Association. For 18 years she gave swimming lessons for schools in Solingen.
