Christianity in Mauritania
The Christianity in Mauritania is a minority religion in relation to the prevailing Islam; almost all residents of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania are Sunnis .
About 0.26% of the population of Mauritania are Catholic Christians . Churches are in Nouakchott , Atar , Zouérate , Nouadhibou and Rosso . There is the diocese of Nouakchott .
Position of Christians
There are laws that guarantee religious freedom, but Christians are subject to various restrictions. The distribution of non-Islamic religious material, proselytizing Muslims and converting from Islam to other religions (see apostasy in Islam ) are prohibited. There are also cases of harassment of Christians. Not a single Christian organization is officially recognized and Christian radio programs are prohibited.
