Karlsson competed annually in the Four Hills Tournament from 1972 . However, he was unsuccessful until 1980. On December 30, 1979, he made his debut in the Ski Jumping World Cup with the opening competition of the Four Hills Tournament 1979/80 . He was part of the World Cup squad because he had recently won the Swedish championship on the normal hill. In the ski jumping World Cup, however, he was largely unsuccessful. His best placings were two 13th places in Saint-Nizier . At the end of the season he was 70th overall in the World Cup with 10 World Cup points. After the season he withdrew from the international ski jumping business, but was able to win the gold medal again at the national level in 1980 at the championships on the normal hill. He then ended his active ski jumping career.
