The Nativity of Christ Church (Kostroma)
The Church of the Nativity in Gorodishche ( Russian: Церковь Рождества Христова на Городище ) is a Russian Orthodox church building in the central Russian city of Kostroma . The church is on Datschnaya Street in a rural part of Kostroma on the right bank of the Volga .
history
The period in the middle of the 17th century is considered to be the time when the church was built. The name of today's church is derived from the former village called Gorodishche on the Volga. In the 17th century this village belonged to the Morozov boyar family , whose best-known representative, Feodosiya Morosova , who was venerated by the Orthodox , had owned the village since 1662. In 1663 the church at Gorodishche was mentioned in documents as an already existing stone church. After Feodosiya Morozova's imprisonment in 1671, all of her possessions, including Gorodishche including the church and churchyard , passed into the possession of the tsarist's court . Around 1700 the Church of the Nativity of Christ must have been heavily rebuilt or even rebuilt, as it is mentioned in a document from 1702 as “newly built”.
Design
Originally the church had a five-domed shape. It received its current roof with only one onion dome either in the course of the renovations in the late 17th century or after a fire in 1773. The church is already mentioned as single-domed in documents from the 19th century. The ensemble of the Church of the Nativity of Christ includes a bell tower consisting of two tiers, the lower one being square and the upper one being octagonal. To the south-east of the church there is an annex, also crowned by a dome, which is dedicated to the biblical prophet Elijah . For this reason, the whole church is often incorrectly called Elijah Church (Russian Ильинская церковь ). The church ensemble is now a listed building as a national cultural heritage.
