Christian August Geutebrück (born January 29, 1759 in Erfurt , † April 29, 1817 in Gotha ) was a German archivist and councilor in Gotha.

Life

He was born in Erfurt as the son of Carl August Geutebrück, later bailiff and archivist to Georgenthal. He entered the civil service of Duke Ernst II of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg at a young age . With his son Friedrich, who later became Duke Friedrich IV of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg , he had a very close friendship from an early age, which lasted beyond his death. In 1803 he donated 200 thalers for the Frankenberg'sche Hospital in Gotha, from which the interior furniture was purchased. In the years 1804 to 1810 he was also active as a financial administrator for Frederick IV as long as he was in Rome. The Duke noted that Geutebrück ran the business "with exemplary order and loyalty". Until his death Geutebrück belonged to the Masonic lodge "Ernst zum Kompass". He found his final resting place on the Gothaer Alten Gottesacker (also called Friedhof I), which was closed in 1909; his tombstone is preserved.

After death

Frederick IV traveled to Rome for the third time in 1814 to recover from tetanus. When he returned to Gotha in 1820, his friend Christian August Geutebrück, who took care of his finances and business, had died three years ago. Since he could no longer see him and could not attend his funeral in the old church, he placed a memorial stone in the ducal park in Gotha as the last great proof of his friendship. A year later, at the request of the Freemasons, a sphinx was placed on the stone as a sign of the faithful and close association of the council with the "Ernst zum Kompass" lodge. The creator of the delicate, very finely formed sphinx made of Seeberg sandstone was the Gotha court sculptor Friedrich Wilhelm Eugen Döll . The figure had already been made by Döll years before and was found in the estate of his stonemasonry after his death in 1816. The base, on the other hand, was made by his son Leopold Döll .
