Christian Gotthold Engelmann (1819–1884)

Christian Gotthold Engelmann (born November 26, 1819 in Stuttgart ; † February 11, 1884 in Basel ) was a German pharmacist and chemical manufacturer and founded the Engelmann family's Basel line. His father of the same name, Christian Gotthold Engelmann (1787–1847), was also a pharmacist and chemical manufacturer.

Christian Gotthold Engelmann (1819–1884) was born on November 26, 1819 in Stuttgart as the son of Christian Gotthold Engelmann (1787–1847) and, like his father, learned the profession of pharmacist. After 4 years of training in Bönnigheim and 2 years as an assistant in Tuttlingen and Marbach, he worked in his father's factory in Stuttgart and visited chemical laboratories in Paris. In 1844 he studied chemistry for a semester at the University of Giessen under Justus von Liebig .

On October 3, 1846, he passed his pharmacy exam in Stuttgart and joined his father's company, where he worked in the laboratory. In 1850 he married Rosalie Lanz (1825–1874) from Wattwil in Switzerland. A son from this connection was Theodor Engelmann (1851–1931). After 1853 Engelmann lived in Bern, where his mother's parents lived. In 1866 he acquired the Kellermannsche Apotheke in Klein-Basel, which he handed over to his son Theodor Engelmann in 1881. Engelmann died on February 11, 1884 at the age of 63 in Basel. His wife died ten years earlier on December 31, 1874 at the age of 49 in Basel. Engelmann, his wife and their son Theodor Engelmann were buried in a family grave in the Wolfgottesacker cemetery in Basel.
