Theodor Engelmann, son of the pharmacist Christian Gotthold Engelmann-Lanz from Stuttgart and Rosalie Lanz from the Canton of Bern, attended grammar school in Basel. His father bought the Kellermann pharmacy there in the 1860s. After completing his two-year pharmacist internship in Esslingen am Neckar and his assistant year in Montreux , he studied pharmacy at the University of Bern .

Following his pharmacy studies, he studied medicine for two semesters and obtained his doctorate. Theodor Engelmann took over his father's pharmacy and ran it until his death.

He performed numerous municipal tasks, for more than 20 years as a representative of the liberal party in the Grand Council , and was a collector of art and antiquities from pharmacies. During his time, hardly anyone was interested in the antiquity of pharmaceutical certificates. He put together an extremely rich collection, which was transferred to the Pharmaceutical History Museum at the University of Basel in 1929 .

In various publications he dealt with the investigation of some pharmaceutical historical objects. Engelmann's art collection contained originals by Ludwig Richter , Carl Spitzweg and the Bernese genre painter around 1800. These he donated to the Kunstmuseum Bern , for which he was made an honorary citizen of the city of Bern.

Engelmann was not married. In 1896 he was promoted to Dr. med. hc of the University of Basel , the Natural Research Society in Bern made him an honorary member.
