The parish church in Seetal was first mentioned in a document in 1388, and in 1461 it was called "Sand Johanns am See bey Klausekk". The name refers to the nearby Klausegg Castle and the Seetaler See. On the basis of excavations in 1998 it is proven that the church of Seetal dates from the 11th or 12th century. In the 18th century, it was baroque. In 1799 a sacristy was added to the east . A general renovation took place between 1998 and 2002.

In 1642 Seetal in Lungau lost its independence as a parish and was subsequently vicariate of Tamsweg. The parish was rebuilt in 1891, and since 1918 it has also included Fresen in Styria , a district of the municipality of Ranten .

The east-facing parish church stands a little higher up next to the road and is surrounded by a cemetery. The church tower on the west side dates from the 13th century. and received its present form in 1715 with a curved tent roof . The single-nave nave shows arched windows in the north and south. The slightly lower, slightly retracted choir has a cross vault with a three-sided end with a fan vault.

Altars of the parish church Seetal

The baroque high altar was created around 1700, the side altars at the beginning of the 18th century. The high altar picture shows the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan. On the sides of the high altar there are figures of the plague saints Sebastian and Rochus, which point to the plague epidemic in the Seetal in 1713. The two richly decorated side altars belong to the work of the Tamsweg altar carpenter Gregor Sapser, the style is called "Lungau acanthus baroque ".

The organ was built by Johann Pirchner.

Murals

In 1998, late Gothic wall paintings were uncovered in the choir, which were created in the second half of the 15th century by "Master von Schöder ". On the north side of the choir wall is Christ as the judge of the world , as well as a representation of the gate to heaven guarded by Peter. Further wall paintings behind the high altar show the birth of Jesus and the adoration of the wise men.
