Christian Gottlob Holtzhausen (born  May 12, 1811 in Wittenberg ; †  June 12, 1894 there ) was an honorary citizen of Wittenberg.

Life

Holtzhausen came from a family originally settled in Magdeburg , a representative of whom was active in Wittenberg at the end of the 18th century. The son of the cloth maker and citizen of Wittenberg Johann Jakob Holtzhausen (born June 29, 1772 in Magdeburg, † October 14, 1844 in Wittenberg) and his second wife Johanna Friedericke Wilhelmine (née Kretschmar; born March 4, 1784; † March 6 1824 in Wittenberg) had attended the Wittenberg city school and learned the cloth making trade from his father. On March 7th, 1834 he became a master cloth maker himself and with that acquired the citizenship of Wittenberg.

From his father he took over his cloth maker and developed it into an early industrial cloth factory. From 1853, Holtzhausen took part in the organizational tasks in Wittenberg as an honorary city councilor and city councilor. After thirty years of beneficent service in these offices, he resigned from his honorary offices on grounds of age. In recognition of his valuable services as a city councilor and councilor , he was granted honorary citizenship in Wittenberg on November 22, 1883 .

Holtzhausen died in Wittenberg in June 1894. He was buried in the Wittenberg city cemetery, in the Holtzhausen family's nest on Dresdener Strasse.

His descendants stopped manufacturing cloths and instead built one of the largest textile department stores in the city. Today the C&A department store is located in these premises .
