Christian Herfurth

Christian Herfurth (born July 27, 1972 in Wiesbaden ) is a German politician ( CDU ) and mayor of Idstein since 2014 .

Life

After graduating from the Pestalozzi School in Idstein , he studied law and political science . He also completed an apprenticeship as an office clerk. He then worked for a few years as an office clerk at LSG Fraport GmbH before taking on the post of full-time managing director of the CDU district parliamentary group in the Rheingau-Taunus district.

Christian Herfurth joined the Junge Union in 1987 , where he was chairman of the Junge Union Idstein from 1989 to 1999. In 1988 he joined the CDU . In the local elections in Hesse in 1998 , he was elected as city councilor to the city council of Idstein, where he was elected city councilor from 2007. Christian Herfurth was managing director of the CDU district parliamentary group in the Rheingau-Taunus district and press spokesman for the CDU Rheingau-Taunus.

In the election for Mayor of Idstein on September 22, 2013, he sat down with 56.1 percent (7,426 votes) against Ellen Maurer-Genc (SPD) with 29.1 percent, Corinna Schwarze (FDP) with 7.9 percent and Christoph Völke (independent) with 6.8 percent. He was thus elected as the successor to Mayor Gerhard Krum (SPD) and took up this office on January 14, 2014.

On May 26, 2019, he prevailed with 54.0 percent (6,782 votes) against Christian Ehrentraut (FDP) with 24.1 percent and Beate Melischko (non-party) with 21.9 percent of the votes cast. Moving the election forward from September 1, 2019 to May 26 was highly controversial in local politics.

Political controversy

Herfurth had described indications of a possible closure of the Tournesol bath, financed as part of a public-private partnership , in 2011 as unfounded scaremongering. After years of stagnation, however, the insolvency proceedings against Tournesol Idstein Betriebs GmbH were opened in 2018 and in the following year the city of Idstein acquired the Tournesol bath for 4.5 in order not to be drawn down from the guarantee of 25 million euros laid out in this connection Million Euros. The purchase, the guarantee and the financing of the purchase price were discussed controversially on the occasion of the mayoral election.
