Christian Töns

Christian Töns (born January 13, 1958 - November 17, 2008 ) was a German surgeon . He was considered to be one of the pioneers in surgical oncology .

Life

Töns graduated from Adolfinum Moers in 1977 and studied human medicine at the University of Düsseldorf . After his doctorate (summa cum laude) as Dr. med. at the University of Düsseldorf under Wolfgang Bircks with the work "Comparative animal experiments on the usability of synthetic absorbable sutures (polyglycolic acid, polydioxanone) in cardiovascular surgery" he was licensed as a doctor in 1984 . After working as an assistant doctor, he received the area recognition "Doctor for Surgery" in 1991, with a specialization in "Surgical Intensive Care Medicine" from 1997. In 1997 he qualified as a professor at the Medical Faculty of RWTH Aachen University with the paper "Intraoperative Diagnostics and Vitality Prediction of Acute Mesenteric Circulatory Disorders" . In 2000 he was appointed senior physician in charge in Aachen with a focus on visceral surgery and thoracic surgery. In 2002 he became chief physician of the surgical clinic of the St. Franziskus Hospital in Cologne, from 2003 chief physician of the clinic for general, vascular and visceral surgery in the Marien Hospital in Düsseldorf.

Töns held numerous patents for innovative and intraoperative procedures. In addition to many lecture prizes, in 1992 he received the advancement award for surgical intensive medicine of the German Society for Surgery . Among other things, he was a member of the German Society for Surgery. In 2002 he was appointed to the editorial board of Hernia magazine . On November 17, 2008, he died of acute heart failure while at work.
