Christine Penick

Christine Penick (born November 30, 1956 ) is a former judoka from the United States. She was third in the 1980 World Cup and won the 1983 Pan American Games.

Athletic career

Christine Penick mostly fought in the middleweight division, the weight class up to 66 kilograms. She won her first American championship title in 1974, when women’s competitions were on the program for the first time at the US championships. In total, she won ten championship titles by 1987.

At the end of November 1980, the first World Championships for women took place in New York City . Penick lost in the semifinals to the British Dawn Netherwood . She won the battle for bronze against Marie-France Mill from Belgium . Two years later, Penick was eliminated from the 1982 World Cup in the quarter-finals against Dutch Anita Staps .

In 1983, women's judo competitions were held for the first time at the Pan American Games in Caracas . In the middleweight final, Penick and the Canadian Lorraine Methot faced each other and Penick won the gold medal. In 1984 Penick retired at the World Championships in Vienna in the round of 16 against Jolanta Adamczyk from Poland . The following year Penick won the Pan American Championships in Havana.

In August 1987 Penick won a bronze medal at the Pan American Games in Indianapolis . At the 1987 World Championships in Essen she was defeated in the quarterfinals by the German Alexandra Schreiber . She lost the battle for bronze against Roswitha Hartl from Austria. In 1988 Penick won again the Pan American Championships, this time in the light heavyweight division.
