Christmas market on Marienplatz
The Christkindlmarkt on Marienplatz is a Christmas market on Marienplatz in Munich .
history
The largest and oldest Christmas market in Munich was first mentioned in a document in 1310 as Nikolaimarkt ( Nikolausmarkt ) and is therefore one of the oldest Christmas markets in the German-speaking area. In 1806 the Nikolaimarkt was renamed the Christmarkt. Since 1972, after having moved several times, the store has found its regular location at Marienplatz. Over the past few years, the event space has been expanded considerably (e.g. cattle market ). The event is organized by the Department for Labor and Economics of the City of Munich.
description
With around 140 market stalls, it has around three million visitors from all over the world every year. In addition to the extensive musical and cultural accompanying program, its attractions include the almost 30-meter-high Christmas tree in front of the town hall with around 2,500 lights, which is donated to the citizens of Munich every year by a different locality from home or abroad (Austria, Italy). In return for the gift, the community is allowed to present itself to tourists in the inner courtyard of the town hall and to serve mulled wine. The great interest of extra-urban communities in this opportunity for self-expression forced the organizers to keep a waiting list lasting several years. The market is usually open daily from the Friday before the 1st Sunday in Advent until Christmas Eve .
West of Marienplatz, in the direction of Stachus , is the so-called Kripperlmarkt . More than ten stalls around the Richard-Strauss-Brunnen in Neuhauserstraße offer only nativity scenes, nativity figures and other accessories. There are also some of the typical seasonal food stalls. The Kripperlmarkt in the Munich pedestrian zone is open daily and also closes on December 24th ( Christmas Eve ) at 2 p.m.
