Birchler made his debut in the Ski Jumping World Cup on January 17, 1992 at jumping in St. Moritz . In the end, he reached 43rd place. He also remained without World Cup points in the other jumping competitions of the 1991/92 World Cup season . After he again failed to score points in the opening competition for the 1992/93 season in Sapporo on December 20 with 26th place, he was transferred to the newly created Ski Jumping Continental Cup . After he was able to achieve his first major successes there in the 1993/94 season , he was nominated again for World Cup jumping in January 1994. In the first competition in Liberec he was able to win his first and only World Cup points with 23rd place. He finished the 1993/94 World Cup season with eight points in 79th place in the overall World Cup ranking. In the following years, in which he jumped in the World Cup and in the Continental Cup at the same time, he could no longer build on his achievements and ended his active World Cup career on February 9, 1997 after ski flying on the Kulm and after another year in 1998 his active ski jumping career in the Continental Cup.
