Christoph Burchard

Johann Christoph Burchard (born May 19, 1931 in Göttingen ) is a German Protestant theologian . He is a specialist in the New Testament and ancient Judaism .

After studying at the Georg-August University Göttingen , he was there in 1963 with a thesis on the novel Joseph and Aseneth doctorate . He then worked there as an assistant and completed his habilitation in 1969. In 1971 he accepted a call from the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg to the chair of New Testament and Judaism. He has been retired since 1997 .

In addition to the novel Joseph and Aseneth , Burchard dealt with numerous other topics of ancient Christianity and Judaism. He wrote a two-volume catalog on the Dead Sea manuscripts, published on the language and environment of the New Testament, and wrote a commentary on the Epistle of James .
